International Recognition for Linfield 5
A big night of international recognition for 5 Linfield players.Northern Ireland defeated Georgia 4-1 at Windsor Park. Peter Thompson and Michael Gault came on as subs in the 70th minute and Alan Mannus came on as a sub in the 80th minute. The last time three Linfield or indeed three Irish League players played for the national team was in 1984 when George Dunlop, Lee Doherty and Martin McGaughey played at the national stadium in a 3-0 win against Israel in 1984.To cap off a truly remarkable and proud evening for three home grown Linfield players, Peter Thompson scored his country's fourth and final goal three minutes from time.
Earlier in the day Jamie Mulgrew and Thomas Stewart played the final half hour of the U21 friendly game against Romania at Ballymena. The visitors won 3-1 with Thomas Stewart scoring his country's goal in the 65th minute. (Article Taken from linfieldfc.com)

.....wait til i pick myself up of the floor...did i just read the words proud, national team and international recognition....shock horror....has Pete Martin finally come to his senses and started supporting his country??
Get yourself a norn iron top Pete! Join the GAWA!
PS. I reckon Mandy Smith in his prime was a better player than peashooter pete!! ;)
Don't get too excited lad, I'm proud of my boys! I'm not the jumping up and down for the "national" side... ;-)
Mandy Smith was never in the same league as pistol Pete...
Pete, you're a complete joke!! You hate the Northern Ireland international team. Here's my take on events you joker... Three Linfield players made a squad, not out of merit but out of Boring Nigel doing his bit for the Irish League (fair play to him). It was a friendly match against a poor team and didn't mean a whole lot. Michael gault was piss poor and looked like a wee lad playing a big mans game, Alan Mannus was on for such a short time that he didn't even get his gloves on properley and as for Thompson haha, he ran around like a headless chicken and fell onto a goal mouth scramble putting it into the net with his arm from 3 centimetres out! same old Linfield!
In a competitive friendly, these boys will never get a look in. There are a lot of other players in the UK leagues with a lot more talent.
Anyway, all that aside, i'd love to play for my country ... even out of a sympathy vote.
You should be proud of Northern Ireland Pete and proud of our football team - The Northern Ireland Football team more than anything else in this country demonstrates genuine diversity. The team is a mix of men from across this wee country of ours - all from different backgrounds and political persuasions but they’re all united behind their national football team - they are all proud to pull on the green and white jersey and for once everyone in Northern Ireland has something to be proud off, something to get excited about. And look at the results over the past couple of years we have beaten Spain, England and Sweden to name a few…..incredible plus a wee lad from k
Killyleagh has managed to score more goals in European qualifying than anyone in European qualifying history!! So whats the big problem with supporting Northern Ireland?!? Think about it…….
Well lads I'm glad you both felt free to get that off your chest. Fair play to ya's!!! Personally I'd like to see local football properly regulated, financed and developed. Thats never going to happen under the IFA and its "old boys" style of management. As Roy Coyle recently stated never in all his time did he see the IFA do anything for local football. Personally I think the future of football on this island is one national league. Under Uefa regs thats never gonna happen with two national teams. (Although I have heard that they are relooking at that.) So its time for the GAWA to step aside and let local football flourish... You'll gladly support one national Rugby team so why not football. Politics? Think about it...
There is no all ireland football team to support so i dont see your point at all????
The NI team is only political if you want to make it political but for me and all the other GAWA its about being proud of our wee country no matter who you are or where you are from!!
Whats the problem with supporting Northern Ireland when you quite happily support the Ulster rugby team??
"Whats the problem with supporting Northern Ireland when you quite happily support the Ulster rugby team??"
Even if I was an Ulster supporter which I'm not how could these two be compared...
My point is simple for football to flourish things need to change. It's time to leave the past behind and build for the future and the first thing I would do would be to scrap the IFA and the GAWA.
"There is no all ireland football team to support so i dont see your point at all????"
If you read my reply I didn't at any stage suggest that there was an all Ireland football team rather to suggest there should be and ask why you wouldn't support it.
one team in Ireland mate and i'm not talking all ireland
well as they say "Linfield - the biggest club in Ireland"
You will never scrap the GAWA biglad!!!
100% correct - I won't but hopefully commonsense and others will...
Its time the IFA thought of those who go tp 30-40 matches a year instead of those who go to 3 - 4 max...
Anyone up for some fishing?
You rioting at the weekend there?
same old Linfield
